Description
In the sky shines a carbon dioxide (CO2) molecule. Human-made CO2 is the primary driver of global warming and its destabilizing effects on the Biosphere, our shared Home.
The wavy diagonal line represents the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration from 1958 to 2014*. The line undulates each year as the Northern Hemisphere's Forests inhale CO2 (in spring and summer) and exhale in autumn and winter.
A portion of the CO2 lands in our Ocean where it creates carbonic acid that breaks down into hydronium ions, depicted in dark blue. Hydronium acidifies the Ocean, bleaching coral reefs and making life difficult for many of our marine Friends who can't adapt fast enough.
In the last 60 years, CO2 has risen about 100 times faster than it would under natural conditions. And CO2 levels haven’t been this high in at least 2,000,000 years. Human civilizations have existed for only 8,000.
We are in uncharted territory. How are your navigation skills?
--------------------------------------
* CO2 measurements began in 1958. I did this drawing in 2015 when CO2 was 401 ppm. Today (2023) it’s 417 ppm.

I really enjoyed your visual about CO2 and your explanation about our human made CO2 destruction. Congratulations! Your amazing image is featured on the "Environmental Art - Specifically Ocean Conservation" home page! Thank you for your participation in this group and for bringing this to the forefront!
